The War in the East
April 17, 1861 - April 9, 1865
This page links to events in the East. This is the most popular and best known part of the war, partially due to its proximity to the major newspapers of the day and partially because it included the two capitols, Washington and Richmond. A reported could leave the Willard Hotel in downtown Washington, rent a carriage, ride out the front line, watch a battle, ride back to the hotel bar write up his story and telegraph it to his paper in time to be published the next day. Also, interest in the Eastern Theater was spured by the early big losses suffered by the Army of the Potomac and the contest that developed between U.S. Grant and Robert E. Lee. Lee still captures people’s imaginations; his striking photograph and battlefield wizardry are admired to this day. If you read a lot of Civil War histories, you can get the impression that the whole war was fought here in the East.
