Lee's Retreat: Namozine Presbyterian Church
April 3, 1865

Lt. Gen. Richard Anderson setup a headquarters at the Namozine Presbyterian Church after the fall of Petersburg to gather and regroup the various units retreating down Namozine road. Lee had ordered all of his forces to gather at Amelia Court House but the Confederates were not traveling alone, Grant was on the road as well. Following Anderson was Maj. Gen. George Custer which was why Anderson felt he needed to concentrate his forces before going on to Amelia Court House. Custer caught up to Anderson's hodgepodge of units shortly after 9 A.M. Custer's troopers advanced down the road and his lead elements charged the Confederate position. The Confederates attempted to launch a counterattack but their lines broke and those who did not flee were killed or captured.
The Confederate forces were split up with most headed toward Amelia Court House and other who were cut off headed southwest. The Confederate Gen. Barringer and his staff was captured in the confusion after the Confederate position collapsed.

Gen. Anderson made his H.Q. in the church, both sides used the building as a hospital.

A view of the countryside. The point of these pictures of Tabernacle Church is to show the change in the countryside. They have moved up out of the wetlands and into the foothills.
