Mr. Gridley's Monument
After returning home from auctioning off his sack of flour all around the nation Mr. Gridley discovered that the silver had played out in Austin and he was broke. Not knowing what else to do Mr. Gridley closed his store in downtown Austin and moved to Stockton, CA. There he died penniless and was buried by the county in a paupers grave. When word of this spread among the Union veterans living in Stockton that Gridley was buried in their town and the circumstance under which he was buried they decided to do something to show their gratitude; so the made up a mess of small flour sacks and sold them nationwide for five dollars apiece until they had enough money to get Mr. Gridley a proper monument. So now he lays, a southern supporter, in the old military section of the grave yard surrounded by Union soldiers who respected him greatly.
