The Overland Campaign

Map of Richmond, VA and Surrounding Country

Grant’s Overland campaign started with the crossing of the Rapidan River at Germanna Ford. His generals often stopped at churches to rest and talk things over. Driving through the countryside it’s easy to see why, it’s beautiful but brushy and swampy.

Occasionally, they stopped and had a battle.

The actual ford is off to the right in this picture. There is supose to be a road on this side of the bridge just out of the picture that goes down to the ford, which can still be made out.

When they could they stopped at a tavern.

Now, doesn't this church look more inviting than that swamp?
