Lee's Retreat: Clifton/New Store
April 8, 1865 or there abouts

Lee’s first plan had been to lose Grant at Farmville. It had depended upon the destruction of the High Bridge over the Appomattox River and the destruction of the bridges at Farmville. By moving fast Lee could have disappeared into the hill country. Unfortunately for Lee, the High Bridge wasn’t destroyed and Lee found himself attacked at Cumberland Church. Worse, a large column of troops were shadowing his every move, Lee couldn’t know whether this was just a column or the main force of the Union Army. From this point on Lee was being drive toward Appomattox whether he wanted to go there or not.

Clifton/New Store are sleepy little villiages. The dog on the left woofed but didn't bother to raise his head.

Quite beautiful though.

Lee was following this same road. It's paved now but not much else has changed.

It really is pretty country out here. I love the play of colors.
