The beach is flanked by dunes most of the way to the lighthouse. They would have screened the refuges from the Confederate Ships who were in the sound.

Until, at last, they came to the light house.
But once they got here it was daylight, they had nothing and could go no further. The lack of fresh water became a real problem in the heat.
