N.C. and the Southside: The Chicamacomico Races

This place should be close to the Union position, Camp Live Oak.

They moved at night down the seashore because the Mosquito Fleet was in the Sound on the west and the middle part of the island was dunes or wetlands. Photo: Sunrise over the Atlantic on Cape Hatteras
 
The beach is flanked by dunes most of the way to the lighthouse. They would have screened the refuges from the Confederate Ships who were in the sound.

Until, at last, they came to the light house.
 
 
But once they got here it was daylight, they had nothing and could go no further. The lack of fresh water became a real problem in the heat. As luck would have it relief arrived and the race was on again the other direction: With the Confederates running this time, but not before looting and burning the property of the people of.
